INTUITIVE ENERGY HEALING: Basic FAQ

Information on the style of hands-on energy healing I practice, how it relates to clients, and how I am trained.

WHAT IS INTUITIVE ENERGY HEALING?

Intuitive Healing is an energy healing method intended to open, balance, clear, and energize the human energy field. It is not a standardized therapy, is unique to each practitioner, and can take many forms. In my practice it is a combination of energetic healing methods which may include a variety of modalities such as Healing Touch, Reiki, work informed by colleagues and mentors Amy Schill and Jana Kilgore, techniques learned from both Cyndi Dale and Awakening Healing AXIS (all of which may be performed with or without contact). In the process I may receive subtle-direction to employ ritual or sacred objects, movement, sound, scent, guided imagery, flower essence remedies and more. My role as a facilitator is to make myself as clear and expansive a channel as possible, allowing guides and allies to manifest their presence in healing context. I do not heal, rather I am present for the Divine Energies of Source and “helpers” invited into the healing-space and human energy fields. I am merely a conduit and space-holder for the intention and manifestation of healing which may be experienced as deep relaxation, shifting of energies, realignment with highest self, remembrance of inner truth, release of that which no longer serves, reconnection to intuitive-sense, profound insights, and more.

WHAT CONDITIONS IS IT USED FOR?

Intuitive Healing is a simple, natural, and safe method of healing for mind, body, and spirit. It can be used to support individuals experiencing nearly any condition including:

  • Physical pain

  • Anxiety

  • Phobias

  • Grief

  • Dark-night-of-the-soul

  • Loss of self

  • Disconnection

  • Fear

  • Major life transitions

  • and more…

Those with low blood pressure and certain other conditions may need to exercise caution when standing after an Intuitive Healing treatment, but Intuitive Healing is not contraindicated for such situations. Intuitive Healing is not intended to replace medical care, rather it supports the healing and wellness process

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

Intuitive This flexible modality is equally effective in-person as it is via distance session. Healing practices vary dramatically from practitioner to practitioner. This modality is frequently practiced in a setting somewhat similar to the sort used for massage therapy, Reiki, and Healing Touch. In my practice, clients are made as comfortable as possible and may be sitting, standing, or lying down. This therapy does not require the removal of clothing and in my practice clients remain fully clothed for all sessions. Practitioners may engage in a short discussion of medical history during the first visit and should always ask for permission to touch the client, should touch be a possible healing method in the session. Most practitioners use mainly light, non-invasive touch but touch-type (with consent) may include rocking or gentle shaking, sweeping, pressure and more. Off-body hand placements may be used over wounds or injury sites or by preference of the client or practitioner. Most practitioners perform a personal meditative grounding and centering prior to beginning therapy and I may also make an assessment of the energetic field of the client at the beginning and end of treatment.

In my practice a typical session involves:

  • An invocation of and giving-of-thanks to the guides, allies, guardians, angels and ancestors of both myself and my client and a request for their presence in support of healing.

  • The possibility of recieving messages or sensations or be directed to make specific sounds, hand placements, movements or ask questions, etc.

  • Receipt of guidance on where to place my hands or what techniques to use for healing in a given session.

  • Honoring of client’s preferences for silence during the session and/or sharing of important information during the closing of our time together or provide a narration of that which comes through during the client’s time on the table if the client wishes me to.

  • Encouragement to ask questions if inspired and participate as client feels called to.

  • Oftentimes, clients experience a state of deep calm and relaxation and may even fall asleep or be in a dreamy state of consciousness. Moreover, they can experience warmth, tingling, pulsations or other sensations. Their bodies may exhibit involuntary muscle spasm and jerking. Some individuals report seeing colors or visions, receiving messages, deep realizations, powerful inner-experiences or emotional release. Others experience feeling elevated or being outside their body or more aware of and connected to their embodied experience.

  • Grounding at closing of session by placing hands (with consent for touch) on the client’s feet, head or shoulders.

  • Acknowledgement, expression of gratitude, and release of guides and other presences contributing to the healing session.

  • Care should be taken when getting up off the table to avoid falling due to disorientation or lightheadedness. Clients are invited to drink plenty of water afterward and over the next few days, as well as to pay attention to any changes, new awarenesses or body sensations.

Distance Sessions typically begin and close with a telephone conversation, bridged by their energy medicine or intuitive session. Clients are asked to become as comfortable as possible and are invited to leave the phone line open throughout the session, if desired. Clients may state their preference for silence or verbal guidance and sharing during their session and are encouraged to ask for what they need in order to feel most supported.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Because Intuitive Healing is so non-invasive, there is no medical reason to avoid therapy. As a certified practitioner of both Reiki and Healing Touch I am trained to address emotional trauma or responses that come up during a session in a respectful way, and will always stop if asked. Practitioners are present to listen with compassion. Unless a practitioner is a licensed clinical therapist they should not offer counseling or therapy beyond their training.

More than anything, the deep relaxation that Intuitive Healing often produces can bring about mild sedation, lightheadedness, or disorientation in susceptible people. Individuals with a history of low blood pressure, dehydration, anemia, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), vertigo or syncope should take extra precautions with body position during treatment (such as standing after prolonged sitting or lying down), and be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids before and after a session.

IS THERE RESEARCH?

There is, indeed, research on the power of intention, prayer and energetic healing techniques. As Intuitive Healing is my name for this style of healing practice and similar practices are unique to each practitioner, it is impossible to assemble a sound body of research on this exact modality. However, I am trained in and use other energetic medicine modalities for which there is a body of research; Reiki and Healing Touch specifically.

  • Research and resources on Reiki can be found at Center for Reiki Research (membership required to access. Membership is free).

  • Healing Touch is the most well researched energetic medicine modality to date and can offer insight into the efficacy of other energetic medicine modalities. Information on research studies and resources may be found through the Healing Touch Research website.

  • Other research regarding Reiki, Healing Touch, Medical Qi Gong, Therapeutic Touch and other Energy Medicine modalities is available through various sources. The field of quantum physics provides a great deal of theoretical information which applies to the application of energy medicine. There are also excellent general information about energetic medicine and how it works as well as recommended research articles in the book Energy Medicine: the Scientific Basis by James L. Oschman.

WHO CREDENTIALS PRACTITIONERS?

Intuitive Healing style practices are not governed by any overseeing or credentialing body although practitioners may be credentialed in individual modalities that they use during sessions, such as Healing Touch. Individuals may seek training from sources of their choice or may come to similar healing styles naturally and without specific training. This is an organic process and many healers find themselves developing more finely tuned intuitive senses after seeking other energy medicine training or over the course of their practice. Still others are drawn to the field and seek energy medicine training precisely because they have intuitive senses they are already aware of and wish to hone their skills and seek guidance for ethical interaction and safe-practices for working with clients.

My thirty-plus years of experience is bolstered by formal training in energy healing and energy medicine was thorough

Informally, I have deepened my intuitive senses through receiving healing from other practitioners and initiatives, regular connection to intuitive sense through the work I do with my clients and daily acknowledgement of and surrender to the gift. I encourage you to do the same for yourself. You can learn more about my healing journey and my credentials here.
